Do you eat, sleep and breathe history? Or just moderately like it? Either way, Delafield offers museums and tours for all history lovers and likers.
In the final installment of our One City // Five Ways series, we talk about some of Lake Country’s finest historical sites where you can go back in time. These five spots will bring out this history buff in you:
What was once a stagecoach stop is now a Wisconsin Landmark on the National Register of Historic Sites. Built two years before Wisconsin became a state, Hawks Inn was the center of social and political life for farmers, trappers, traders, politicians and miners. Now you can tour the refurbished property and visit The Delafield History Center to view the town’s archives and see the center’s photo collection.
Explore the historical campus that houses the largest military school in the Midwest. St. John’s Northwestern was created when two of the most prestigious military boarding schools combined forces in 1995; Northwestern Military and Naval Academy was stationed in Lake Geneva, WI, while St. John’s Military Academy was in Delafield.
One of the highest-paid, most respected acting duos in the American theatre during the 1900s, Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne, lived less than 15 minutes from Delafield. Their estate, Ten Chimneys, in Genesee Depot featured the Main House, the Cottage and the Studio with ten chimneys among them (hence the name). Today, Ten Chimneys is a world-class museum and a national resource for theatre and art education.
In need of a little fresh air? This 8.8-acre park was dedicated in 1915 to Delafield native First Lieutenant Alonzo H. Cushing, who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. Cushing Memorial Park is the last stop on the Veterans Memorial Riverwalk and connects to the Lake Country Recreational Trail and the Cushing road bike path. And don’t forget to check out the monument dedicated to First Lieutenant Cushing!
Only 20 minutes from Delafield, Old World Wisconsin showcases different areas of Wisconsin’s immigrant past. Travel through time from the 1840s to the 1910s and wander through gardens, explore buildings and get hands-on learning from costumed staff through crafts, trades, chores and more. This is a history buff’s gold mine!
